Our difficulty in crossing boundaries, whether multicultural, relational, or personal, may come from not being aware of the difference between a dialogue and a discussion, or between being on a journey of discovery or an expedition.

Our difficulty in crossing borders, whether multicultural, relational or personal, may be that we are unaware of the difference between dialogue and discussion, or between exploration and expedition. Fred Koolhof shows us why dialogue is the only way to a better living environment. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Dialogue means exploring and discovering more possibilities that are not immediately obvious. Explorers fundamentally understand that there is so much more beyond their horizon than they currently know and see. They also have the wisdom to not take a position during a conversation. If they did, they would be on an expedition focusing only on their own goal within their horizon. These explorers know that an open mind allows them to look at the same things differently.

A dialogue every day

By applying the dialogue, we also see and hear the point of view of other people that touches our common old interest: "What oxygen is for the lungs, is to be heard for the heart". Applying dialogue every day opens our mind, crosses our boundaries to go "out of the box", out of our comfort zone, and finds a new open space to meet people and find more solutions than if we do everything ourselves.

Who's Fred?

How do you build bridges in crisis areas where people of different blood groups still have to work together? Fred Koolhof, dialogue coach and negotiator in the International Security sector, shows us why dialogue is the only way to a better living environment. If we want to break through communicative boundaries, we will have to know the difference between discussion and dialogue. Between an expedition and a voyage of discovery.
